| Abstract | There are several ways to measure a child?s lexical growth. A practical way to do it is through narration. One of the narration techniques is story retelling, thanks to which oral Expression is stimulated and both the creativity and lexical retrieval are encouraged in children, who generate (grammatical) constructions from which several measures, such as mean length of utterance (MLU), lexical diversity and Lexical density can be obtained. The objective of this study is to prove how these Measures grow as kids themselves grow older. In this study, the oral production of 81 kids age 4; 0 to 7; 11 with typical Language development, whose mother tongue is Spanish was analyzed. The LME, The total number of words, the amount of content words produced ?adjectives, Verbs and nouns-, the lexical diversity and the lexical density were compared among the different age groups. Results showed that regarding the LME, the total number of words, the amount of content words and the lexical density, there is an increase among all the age groups. This increase was more stressed between groups four and five and six and seven. Lexical diversity, in contrast with the other results, showed a decrease in Inverse proportion to age. This decrease was more stressed between groups four and five and six and seven. This study contributes to understand how vocabulary develops in Spanish speaking Children, how the number of content words increase, and to know which Measures of language development may be used in order to evaluate the Spanish Language. |
