| Abstract | The aims of the research are 1) To know the significant difference in teaching learning speaking between the students taught using Debate Technique and the students taught using traditional method or techniqueand 2) To know which group of students between those two groups that have better achievements in speaking after the Debate Technique has been implemented in the classroom. In order to achieve the aims, the researcher conducted an experimental research. The research applied is Experimental Research to know if there is a significant difference in speaking skill between (1)The students taught using Debate Technique or is referred as Experimental Group (Class VIII C), and (2) The students taught without using Debate Technique (traditional method) or is referred by Control Group (Class VIII D). The research was conducted in six meetings. In collecting the data, the researcher used test, interview, and observation. In analyzing the data, the researcher used data quantitative (pre-test and post test). The research was conducted at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 2 GondangrejoKaranganyar in 2014/2015 Academic Year. The total number of students in both classes are 64 students. The research findings showed that: (1) There is significant difference between the students taught using Debate Technique and the students taught without using Debate Technique, and 2) The Experimental Group showed better achievement in speaking skill than the Control Group. It can be seen from some indicators:(1) The students’ vocabulary mastery improves, (2) The students have better comprehension in of Debate Technique, and 3) The students also can speak more confidently than before. Besides that, Debate Technique is effective to improve students’ speaking skill. It can be seen from theresult of the research as follows: the mean score of pre-test in Experimental Group was 50.75 and improved to 60.38 in Post Test.The mean score of Pre Test in Control Group was 50.75 and in Post Test they received 51.13. The students also enjoyed the learning and teaching process which can be seen from the attention they paid to the lesson. Keyword : Debate Technique, Speaking Skill, Experimental Research |
