| Abstract | Oligodendrogliomas and Oligoastrozytomas: An analysis of CT and MRT characteristics compared to histopathological grading This thesis focuses on the analysis of characteristics of neuroradiological CT and MRT investigations by oligodendrogliomas as well as by a small collective of oligoastrocytomas which were to be associated with the histopathological grading. Thereby, the characteristics of the of the contrast agent absorption was of crucial importance for these investigations. A retrospective pathological-radiological study including 42 patients and performed from 1990 to 1999 was investigated. 29 of the patients were sick due to an oligodendrogliomas and 13 due to an oligoastrocytomas. The tumour diagnoses were histological ensured by stereotactical biopsys and/or by subtotal tumorexcision and were independently evaluated according to the WHO grading system. Retrospectively standardised pre-surgical CT and MRT shootings were evaluated without knowledge of the tumour grade according to tumour size, infiltrated structures, tumour site, space requirement, calcification, cysts, bleedings, virgin illustrations, and contrast agent absorption. For the oligodendrogliomas 31 MRT and 28 CT shootings, for the oligoastrocytomas 9 MRT and all CT shootings were available. Particularly the correlation between contrast agent absorption and tumour grade as well as between absorption and calcification was examined. Terminatory a static comparison between the histopathological and neuroradiological parameter was performed. A significant correlation between the contrast agent absorption and the presence of endothelial hyperplasia/proliferation could be verified. However, an incidental accumulation of contrast agent, especially in the range of calcification, appeared also by low grade gliomas. Obviously besides blood-brain-barrier-disturbance due to neoangionesis other mechanisms exist, which can cause tumor grade independent intra-tumoural contrast agent absorption in oligodendrogliomas and oligoastrocytomas. On the one hand a blood-brain-barrierinterruption caused by hydrogenated calcium crystals will be discussed, on the other hand especially when discrete, oblong calcifications occur the possibility for misinterpretation of with contrast agent filled expanded capillaries has to be considered. |
