| Abstract | This work focuses on wind gusts observed at the Salvador International Airport during the period 2003-2011. Surface meteorological variables observed at the airport, meteorological satellite images and gridpoint data were used to analyze the interannual, seasonal and hourly variability of the wind gusts and to diagnose the synoptic conditions of one selected case. A fifty two percent of the total number of wind gusts was found in 2003 and 2007 (altogether), with very close values. May had the highest percentage of wind gust reports (22%), while wind directions in the southern sector of the wind rose were more frequent (51%). The selected case (10-11 May 2007) had 5 gusts, at night, with wind direction varying from 190 to 200 degrees. The strongest wind gust, with 190 degrees and 69 km/h, occurred at 01 UTC on the 11th. Deep cumulus clouds (cumulus congestus) were observed within the airport area. This case was associated with a frontal passage in Salvador, as shown by the daily variability of the atmospheric elements observed at the airport surface meteorological station. The Civil Defense of Salvador (CODESAL) registered collapsed and unroofed houses on the 11th. |
