| Abstract | This paper concerns the non parametric statistical detection of signals that have unknown probability distributions and unknown probabilities of presence in a background of white Gaussian noise with unknown standard deviation. On the basis of a limit theorem stated below, a test is introduced. This test performs an estimate of the noise standard deviation and achieves the detection of signals that have probability of presence less than or equal to one half and norm larger than or equal to some known non negative real number A. Experimental results regarding the non parametric detection of sinusoidal carriers in white Gaussian noise are presented. These results suggest that the asymptotic conditions of the limit theorem can somewhat be relaxed and are not so constraining in practice. The radar target detection problem is a typical application of this work. |
