| Abstract | This study seeks to unpack the gendered implications of an influential societal institution, Christianity, through the lens of marital roles. Individual in-person interviews were conducted with 20 residents of Yaounde over a 4 week period, with the aim of analyzing these Christian gender roles in hopes of better understanding their relationship to the desired emancipation of gender. These interviewees included a diverse array of married Christians, religious leaders, and civil society/ public sector constituents. Their responses indicated a strong influence of a decidedly Cameroonian Christianity on beliefs surrounding marital gender roles. These roles place men and women in strict and distinct locations but do not necessarily insist on a division of worth between the genders, though in practice the man may take on an authoritative position. The research concluded that while the bible commands a submissive role for women, Cameroonian women do not see this role as disempowering because they generally view empowerment as their ability to best serve their family. This study found that in seeking emancipation from the patriarchal idea of gender, we must expand the definition of emancipation to include a more collectivist conception of the term, thus there can be no one universally imposed idea of emancipation. |
