| Abstract | Based on the theoretical perspective of Variationist Sociolinguistics (LABOV, 1972), the present work aimed to study the phenomenon of variable nominal agreement in the oral and written language of students from the city of Belo Jardim, Pernambuco, Brazil. Our objectives are: a) to analyze which linguistic factors encourage the students to apply, or not, this agreement rule in their speech and writing, b) to verify if extralinguistic factors contribute to the increased application of this rule, c) to compare the results of this investigative work with those of other research in the field of Variationist Sociolinguistics, bearing in mind the construction of the sociolinguistic profile of the students of Belo Jardim, and d) to investigate if there is asymmetry between speech and writing, based on the percentages and the obtained probabilistic results. By analyzing the percentages and probabilistic results, we compared our results with those of other studies conducted in Brazil, mainly Scherre’s (1988) who conducted one of the groundbreaking studies on nominal agreement in Brazil. The data were collected through interviews (oral mode) and narrative productions made by students (writing mode). The data that make up the corpora were encoded according to the following variables: (i) linguistic (part of speech, position of the element in the phrase, previous marks and phonic prominence) and (ii) extralinguistic (educational level, age group, sex and type of school). These data were collected in a municipal school (4th, 5th, 6th and 9th elementary school grades), a private school (4th, 5th, 6th, and 9th elementary school grades/1st and 3rd high school year grades) and a state school (1st and 3rd high school grades), with 144 students from the city of Belo Jardim, located in the inland of the state of Pernambuco, participating. Based on 14,246 noun phrases in the spoken language and 3373 in the, written language, the results reveal that overall the application of the rule of nominal agreement was higher in the written language than in the spoken language, due to linguistic and extralinguistic factors. |
