| Abstract | Stoichiometric number ~ (r) of the rate-determining step of catalyzed oxidation of S02, in the presence of Pt catalyst was determined to be 2 at 395' and 405'C by following the unidirectional reaction rate by means of 180 as tracer. Incorporating the present result with the previous one1) that ~ (r) is found 2 by means of 35S, it is concluded that the last step of the sequence. 02-~20(a). S02~S02(a) and O(a)+ S02 (a)~S03, of the above overall reaction is rate-determining, where (a) signifies the adsorbed state. 1. In.troduction The present paper is devoted to estabish the mechanism of the catalyzed oxidation of sulfur dioxide, ( 1 ) III the presence of platinum catalyst by determining the stoichiometric number 1.1 (r) of the rate-determining step by means of oxygen isotope in conjunction with the previous result obtained by means of sulfur isotope. Reaction (1) is assumed to proceed through the sequence of steps shown in the first column in Table 1, the stoichiometric number l.I's of respective steps being given in the next column headed by 1.1. According to the theory of steady reaction, the stoichiometric number l.I(r) of rate-determining step is expressed) as ( 2 ) where V+ or V_ is the forward or backward unidirectional rate of cwerall *) The Faculty of Education, Utsunomiya University, Uts1.lllomiya, .Japan. 213 |
