| Abstract | We present relevant information based on the latest report of the Expert Committee on the Diagnosis and Classification of Diabetes Mellitus in the USA in November/2003. This group recommends that the lower limit cut point defining impaired fasting serum glucose should be reduced from < 110 mg/dL to < 100 mg/dL, and the upper limit remain at 125 mg/dL. The clinical diagnosis of pre-diabetes is officially established for the USA (fasting glucose 100-125 mg/dL and 2 h post 75 g of oral glucose; 140-199 mg/dL). Thus, “normal” would now be defined as fasting plasma glucose < 100 mg/dL. It is expected that these new recommendations will have deep implications on preventive, epidemiological and treatment aspects regarding diabetes and the Metabolic Syndrome in this country, if Mexico decides to adopt the above stated conditions. |
