| Abstract | RESUMO Na Regiao Metropolitana de Porto Alegre (RMPA), embora economicamente sejam predominantes atividades urbanas vinculadas aos setores secundario e terciario, observa-se a permanencia de um espaco rural amplo, em que a producao agricola, particularmente de arroz, e bastante relevante na economia de varios municipios. Considerando-se o conjunto da regiao metropolitana, e significativa a extensao espacial das areas ocupadas pela rizicultura e sao grandes tambem os nocivos impactos ambientais que engendra. Nesse contexto, a insercao da producao de arroz orgânico nessa Regiao, gerou impactos significativos em assentamentos rurais e nos modos de vida das familias produtoras. Conforme informacoes da Cooperativa que presta assistencia tecnica aos assentamentos da regiao, Cooperativa de Prestacao de Servicos Tecnicos (COPTEC), esta cadeia ja se constitui na maior experiencia de producao ecologica de arroz da America Latina. Dessa forma, ao analisarmos as reconfiguracoes socio territoriais na RMPA, via insercao da producao do arroz orgânico, nos remetemos ao processo que levou as familias a aderirem a essa “nova pratica produtiva”, que vai, desde a luta pela terra, a chegada destas aos assentamentos e as primeiras tentativas de producao, ate as motivacoes que as levaram a producao do arroz ecologico. E importante destacar que a producao do arroz ecologico na RMPA produziu tanto mudancas economicas quanto mudancas sociais para as familias assentadas envolvidas no processo, uma vez que a necessidade de formacao continua, de troca de experiencias foi ampliando sua visao de mundo, sensibilizando-os para uma maior responsabilidade socioambiental tanto como produtores quanto como consumidores. ABSTRACT In the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre (RMPA), although economically there is predominant urban activities linked to the secondary and tertiary sectors, there are permanently of a wide space, where the agricultural production, rice particularly, it is basically relevant in the economy of several municipal districts. Being considered the group of the metropolitan region, it is significant the space extension of the occupied areas by rice cultivation and are big also the harmful environmental impacts that it engenders. In this context, the insertion of the production of the organic rice in this region generated significant impacts in rural settlements and livelihood of the producing families. According to information about the cooperative that provides technical support to the settlements of the region, Cooperative Technical Services (COPTEC), this group production is already constituted the largest experience of ecological production of rice in Latin America. Of that reform, when we analyse the social territorial configurations in RMPA through insertion of the production of the organic rice, we sent ourselves to the process that took the families join this "new productive practice”, from the struggle for the land, the arrival of thisperson to the settlements and the first production attempts, to the motivations that took them to production ecological rice. It is important to refer that the production of the ecological rice in RMPA produced so much economical changes and social changes for the settler families involved in the process, since the need forcontinuous training, the exchange of experiences expanded its world vision, touching them for a greater environmental responsibility both as producers as consumers.
