| Abstract | This paper is a study about the relationship among gender, labor, and family in the Metropolitan Area of Porto Alegre. It compares data from the Employment and Unemployment Survey (PED — Pesquisa de Emprego e Desemprego) in order to analyze the insertion of men and women into the labor market and their position in the family. The first of the survey questions guiding this analysis deals with the social and family factors that underlie women’s activity or inactivity. The second question refers to the differential involvement of women in productive activities due to their family attributions. The analyzed data suggest the family dimension matters to insertion and participation of women in the labor market. |
