| Abstract | Pacce-Bispo, I.M.G. Evaluation of hematological parameters and incidence of episodes resulting in vaso-occlusion in the patient with sickle cell anemia before and after treatment with hydroxyurea [Master’s thesis – Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul], 2013. Worldwide offered, the therapy with hydroxyurea is one of the options that benefit individuals with sickle cell anemia. Objective: To evaluate hematological parameters and incidence of episodes due to vaso-occlusion in the patient with sickle cell anemia, before and after treatment with hydroxyurea (HU). Methods: Retrospective cohort study that analyzed data from medical records of people with sickle cell anemia assisted at two public institutions of Campo Grande – MS-Brazil, from 19982010. They were compared before (year prior to treatment indication with HU) and after (in the fourth year of therapy with hydroxyurea (HU). Results: Thirty two homozygous individuals (Hb SS), mean age at drug prescription (19.72±7.58 years), mean initial dose of HU 15.59±4.27 mg/kg/day and in the fourth year 22.48±5.35 mg/kg/day. Regarding HbF (14.49±7.52) there was significant difference (p<0.001), He (2.54±0.38), Hct (25.30±4.03) and Hb (9.22±3.34 g/dL). The averages for the parameters HCM (35.07±4.99 pg, p<0.003), platelets (402,063.84±486,540.37), p<0.008) and absolute neutrophils count (6,586.53±2,643.90, p<0.03). The episodes due to vaso-occlusion reduced after use of hydroxyurea, pain crisis (72 vs. 102), infection (15 vs. 48), pneumonia (16 vs. 33), and STA (2 vs.12). Conclusion: Treatment with hydroxyurea causes a significant increase in HbF level, improves the concentration of Hb, He, Htc, MCH, reduces episodes due to vaso-occlusion, pain crises, infection (pneumonia), and acute chest syndrome. |
