| Abstract | In this work we have studied the influence of the sea surface temperature (SST) of the Atlantic Ocean on the Iberian Peninsula precipitation. To this end, we have firstly carried out an independent study of both variables (Atlantic SST and Iberian precipitation). Monthly data sets, covering the period 1871-2001 for the SST and 1900-2001 for the case of the precipitation, have been used. Secondly, the Multi-channel Singular Spectral Analysis (M-SSA) was used to analyze the spatio-temporal structure of the variability, on interannual and interdecadal scales, of both data sets. Based on this study, we found some common oscillatory modes in the SST and the precipitation, having periods of around 13.7, 8.5, 5.5, 3.6 and 2.7 years. Additionally, we found the existence of lags between these oscillatory modes, which provide a potential source of predictability of the Iberian Peninsula precipitation based on the SST of the Atlantic Ocean. |
