| Abstract | The indiscriminate capture of animals is as a serious threat to wildlife as a renewable resource. The main purpose of this work was to identify the motivations that lead rural populations in the semi-arid region of Paraiba state to capture or commerce with wild animals. From November 2009 to May 2011 231 questionnaires were applied to 231 family groups that included 319 children and adolescent students of elementary schools. The questionnaires were of socio-environmental character, and were associated with semi-structured interviews.
