| Abstract | Diabetes mellitus stands out among the chronic diseases by the significant number of deaths it causes. In this scenario, health education becomes an essential element because, in addition to contributing to the reduction of these numbers, intervenes directly in improving the quality of life of these people, allowing them the right to decide the most suitable strategies to promote maintain and regain health. The objective of this study was to analyze the scientific evidence available in the literature, to update the information on the practice of health education for the control of diabetes mellitus in the period from 2006 to 2016. It is an integrative review. The selection of the studies was based on four databases: Database on Nursing, Latin American literature and Caribbean Center on health sciences, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online and the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Heath Literature, resulting in 12 scientific articles. The results showed the integration of health education as a dialogical tool that allows the construction of knowledge, considered as an advisory strategy in the control of diabetes mellitus. In conclusion, health education is an effective method and provides several benefits to the user with diabetes, especially in the construction of the conscious self-care for metabolic control with quality of life. |
