| Abstract | In this study, we considered how to evaluate sound quality of drum type washing machines. At first, a questionnaire was conducted to users for asking appropriate evaluation terms for the sound quality. A few terms were selected frequently such as “discomfort” from the result. Secondary, subjective evaluation test using reproduced washing machine noise at spin drying was performed to obtain the most suitable evaluation term. The result indicated “Quietness” is the most common term among them, and the term was held common sense among them. We, therefore, set the term as the representative evaluation term for evaluating the sound quality. Subsequently, the loudness, that was calculated from the recorded sound pressure signal according to ISO 532B, was observed to express the “Quietness” level very accurately. Finally, we actually evaluated the “Quietness” level of a drum type washing machine using the loudness. Through the loudness analysis using critical band, the loudness at low frequency band had the highest influence on the overall loudness. Then, the low frequency loudness was reduced by applying a countermeasure to the drum supporting damper shaft. As the result, not only the sound pressure level but also the sound quality could be improved. |
