| Abstract | Infrared spectra of imides have so far been investiigated by numerous authors with particular consideration of maleimide'' and suctinimide~. . One of the most recent studies concerned with this subject was presented by U n o and M a c h i d a 6 ' , who examined anddiscussed the linforared spectra of succinimide a;nd maleimide and of their N-deuterated derivatives. They recorded two characteristić absonption bands in the 1700—1772 cm" 1 region, that is, in the rangę of the C=O stretching vibrations. The h:igh-frequency, moderately intense band at 1772 and 1771 c m ' 1 im succiinimide and maleimide, respectively, was assigned by the Japanese authors fo> stretching vibrations of a free, unbonded carbonyl group; the other, extremely intense band at 1700 cm" was attributed to stretching vibrations of a hydrogen-bonded C=O funetion. In their assignments, U n o and M a c h i d a referred to the structural ooncept advaniced by M a s o n 7 1 . Upon examination of the structure of succinimide by the method of X-ray diffraction, Mason suggested the presence of two intermolecular hydrogen bridges. In the light of Mason/s experiments, crystalline succinimide may be therefore referired to as a hydroge^n-bonded cyclic dimer (I). To the authoirs' knowledge, no attempts have been madę so> far to figurę out the energy o/t such hydrogen bonds, even in a rough and ready way. Nevertheless, it seems beyond doubt that — if hydrogen 'bonding |
