| Abstract | | Introduction: Hospitalizations for primary care sensitive conditions (ACSC) are characterized as health situations where effective care in primary health care (PHC) can reduce the risk of hospitalizations. Objective: To describe the admissions to primary care sensitive conditions of living in the city of St. Mateus / ES from 2008 to 2013. Methods: This is a descriptive, exploratory study based on the Hospital Admission Authorizations (AIH) recorded in the Hospital Information (SIH) system and made available through DATASUS site, which describes causes of hospitalizations along with age, sex, race of patients and type of service. The data collected were organized in Microsoft Excel spreadsheet program, and then grouped according to year, cause of hospitalization, age, gender, race / color of patients and type of service. Results: There has been a decrease in ACSC over the years, and admissions was highest among patients aged 50 years and older, male and light brown skinned, with emergency service being the most predominant service type provided. Admissions due to infectious gastroenteritis, cerebrovascular disease, heart failure, diabetes mellitus and bacterial pneumonia were found to be the most common. Conclusion: This research allowed us to know the landscape of ACSC in São Mateus, enabling further contributions to the development of epidemiological surveillance programs. The study may also guide health promotion and disease prevention initiatives as well as cooperation between professionals, managers and the community, focusing on improvements in health problems that are responsible for larger number of hospitalizations.
