| Abstract | Currently there are 8.354 marine species in the world, 390 species for Brazil, with 277 of those in the Northeast and 95 in the state of Pernambuco. This study aimed to conduct an inventory of marine sponges of the North Coast of the state of Pernambuco and provide a list of species for this segment of the coast, which is in a poor state of knowledge about the diversity due to the centralization of records for the capital Recife. Between the period of 2007 to 2011 were collected 198 specimens by free and autonomous dives (SCUBA) in 11 locations. All material was preserved in the Porifera collection of the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPEPOR). For identification of specimens were used slides of espicular dissociation, ectossomal and coanossomal skeleton in addition to scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We found 31 species, seven new records for Pernambuco, a new record for South America (Biemna caribea Pulitzer-Finali, 1986) and a new species (Placospongia sp.nov). Furthermore was made a redescription of Clathria (Thalysias) basiarenaceae (Boury-Esnault, 1973), since the original description were inadequate due to morphology and details of assembly espicular.
