| Abstract | Brazil is one of the most important agricultural world s producers. Therefore, the use of fertilizers in Brazil has to increase to improve the country’s agricultural production. However, the domestic fertilizers production is insufficient to attend this sector and, as a consequence, there will be an increase on deficit of commercial balance of the mineral sector. In Brazil the production of potassium fertilizers is troubling. In 2008, were produced just 10% of the domestic demand. On the nature there are a lot of minerals that contain a high grade of potassium and the mica is the most important group of these minerals because of the large type of rocks that contain them. The phlogopite is a silicate that contains high grade of potassium in the interlayer positions. The goal of this work is a study of the chemical and mineralogical properties of the phlogopitite, a rock that contains phlogopite (mineral from the micas group), as an alternative source of potassium to be used in the Brazilian agriculture. The mineralogical characterization of the rock was run using X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy and the results show that it has around 8.26% K2O. It was possible to observe that the rock contains also a high grade of magnesium (17.5%) due to the presence of talcum. In order to evaluate the availability of potassium on this material, kinetics studies were carried out using acid solutions (nitric, citric and oxalic solutions).
