| Abstract | EnglishThe study below reports an investigation from a history of science text used in high school classes of a public school in Sao Paulo. The referred text reports the concern of a scientist of the 18th century about the nature of heat, once the current theory at that time (caloric) could not satisfactorily explain how heat could be generated by friction between two metallic materials. The text activity was proposed by open discussion between the teacher and the students. From the filming of oral interactions, reading of the historical text and texts written by students, we investigated three epistemological characteristics of scientific knowledge that we believe have reached consensus among philosophers of science, as follows: (A) Science as a human activity; (B) The temporary character of scientific knowledge; (C) Historical view and the science issue. We have concluded that the use of history of science, combined with an open and investigative perspective, emphasizes important elements on the nature of scientific knowledge, usually ignored in teaching, that are essential in the construction of a a more realistic and less dogmatic view of the referred knowledge. portuguesO trabalho abaixo apresentado relata uma investigacao a partir do uso de um texto de historia da ciencia em salas de aula de ensino medio de uma escola publica em Sao Paulo. Este texto relata as duvidas de um cientista do seculo XVIII sobre a natureza do calor, uma vez que a teoria existente na epoca (calorico) nao era suficiente para explicar como o calor poderia provir do atrito entre dois materiais metalicos. A atividade com o texto foi proposta atraves de uma discussao aberta e dialogada entre o professor e os alunos. A partir da filmagem das interacoes orais, da leitura do texto historico e de textos escritos pelos estudantes, investigamos o aparecimento de tres caracteristicas epistemologicas do conhecimento cientifico que consideramos consensuais entre os filosofos da ciencia. Sao elas: (A) A ciencia vista com atividade humana; (B) O carater provisorio do conhecimento cientifico; (C) Visao historica e problematica da ciencia. Concluimos que o uso da historia da ciencia, aliado a uma perspectiva aberta e investigativa, ressalta elementos importantes sobre a natureza do conhecimento cientifico que geralmente sao ignorados no ensino e que sao essenciais para a construcao de uma visao mais realista e menos dogmatica deste conhecimento. |
