| Abstract | Pedro Miguel Luís da Silva III Generally all have the perception that accessibility in general and the transport infrastructure in particularly are fundamental to the development of regions. At the EU states several programs were implemented with the support of EU funds so that differences between regions are reduced and there was a further promotion of economic and social cohesion. In this work one of Portugal region was chosen, namely NUT II Centre, to analyze and understand how road accessibility is a key factor of regional development. To develop this work was drawn up a basic socio-economic data and accessibility to later integrate an Spatial Autocorrelation Analysis, in which the aim is to produce statistical evidence in order to understand is the contribution of accessibility in development. The Spatial Autocorrelation Analysis allows evaluating the territorial behavior of certain variable, i.e., where it forms groups of geographical entities with similar characteristics and close or neighbors (clusters) and where so isolated geographical entities (outliers). Subsequently effected up Spatial Regression Analysis to check how the variables are related in some form, i.e. as certain variables (independent variables type accessibility variables and control variables) affect/change the other variable behavior (dependent variable variable type of development). The main conclusions that can be drawn at the end of this work are that while accessibility is a factor that weighs on regional development in this case the economic, social and sustainable development of NUTII Center, is not the primary. Accessibility indicators studied had no major impact on the increase of this development, verifying the asymmetries between the littoral and the interior. Key-words: accessibility, NUT II Centro, spatial analysis, spatial autocorrelation, regional development. |
