| Abstract | In the past, people with mental problems used to be treated cruelly, thinking that this would contribute to healing and expulsion of evil spirits as believed; however, as the time passed by, these beliefs have been discarded, giving a more humane concept of what a mentally ill person is and all the care that person requires. Electroconvulsive Therapy had its beginnings through experiments with animals and then perfected in humans, this technique was created by the Italians Hugo Cerletti and Lucio Binni, whose research gave popularity to this treatment that seeks to obtain optimal results, which drugs have not been able to get. Before the application of ECT, medical tests must be run on the patient to know if it is suitable or not to apply this treatment on him; in case it is, both the patient and his family must be explained the technique and the process that will be used; with this purpose, the patient will be given the Informed Consent form, which is an essential part before the treatment application since it will contain the patient's and his family's doubts. Electroconvulsive Therapy is used specifically to treat mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, depression and bipolar disorders. The ECT does not have a defined number of sessions; it will depend on the course of the patient's illness as well as the opinion of the psychiatrist. The descriptive methodology was used for detailing the register of certain patients to analyze the variability that they may have despite sharing the same disease. The ECT application in the development of this project turned out to be beneficial for the patients treated since after a determined number of sessions, it was observed how some of the discomfort of their disease was reduced by this technique. |
