| Abstract | The present research is about the decision making process of students concluding the ninth grade, regarding their vocational career. This decision is seen as an important moment in personal and social identity building process. Assuming career aspiration as a result of different kinds of social forces, the author reflects upon different links and the influences within families, the environment, peer groups, school reports and professional and school guidance. Hence resulting in a variety of different forms of managing the decision making process, which cannot be disconnected from the social and cultural reproduction problem. This empirical study was developed in three schools of different surroundings, in which three patterns of professional and school guidance were found. The data gathered included observations, field notes, documental analysis, questionnaires and interviews with parents, students and teachers. From this study it was concluded that the decision making process is influenced by the social boundaries. However, from the author point of view, the interlaces between the micro, meso and macrossociological levels of analysis are paramount in the decision making process. The author argues that the social boundaries have an effect upon the variety of experiences, which an individual is exposed to. These experiences are favourable to exploration and commitment in vocational aspiration. On the other hand, there is a cleavage in the way school success is perceived during obligatory school. The school struggle to resolve this sociological cleavage because in deprived areas there is a lack of resources regarding professional and school guidance strategies. Finally it is understood the way schools politics, at meso level, are regulated by educational politics at macro level. |
