| Abstract | The scientific research about the process of writing has gradually developed from a view on its product to an emphasis on the individual cognitive processes involved in the production of written texts. More recently, the studies have acquired characteristics of interactivity, in which the means of participation of the interlocutor have come to a level of utmost importance, concerning textual writing and rewriting process. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the amount of improvement in the ability of students of English as a foreign language to produce written texts in the target language. Data were obtained in a private language school in Recife. The analysis was based on the observation of linguistic, cognitive, social and interactive processes, implicated in textual (re)writing of narratives of adventure and texts of opinion. The corpus includes a socialcultural questionnaire, video recorded interviews and interactive discourse processes, as well as the students’ (re)written texts. This paper is based, among others, on the works of Vygotsky (1998), Bakhtin (1992) and Bronckart (1999). Results have shown that there is still need for further studies and researches, which may come up with alternatives to the current teaching procedures of writing in the English language. With this paper, we hope to contribute to invest the process of language teaching and learning with a social-interactive character, in which the mediation, carried out by the other, shall be regarded as a determinant factor to the development of the student’s abilities as a critical reader and writer. |
