| Abstract | The increasing levels of air pollution in large urban centers are responsible for several human health problems mainly in the respiratory system. São José dos Campos is considered an urban center of high pollution. However, it doesn’t have a proper network of monitoring system yet. In this work the Tradescantia pallida was used as biomonitor the air quality and definition of the regions that present highest pollution indices. The use of the Trad-MCN assay revealed adequate to the first characterization of the city, disclosing the existence of a gradient in the northward direction, compatible with the predominant direction of the winds. Further, two areas of higher concentration were noted: one in the center of the city and other in the Southeastern region, with typical industrial characteristics. This work was done with the partnership of Municipal and State Schools and other institutions of the community, which contributed for awareness and social mobilization, indeed generating knowledge to preserve the environment and the health of the population in favor of better quality of life. |
