| Abstract | The nineteenth-century city responded to the liberal and rational ideology of the bourgeoisie that undertook a series of reforms oriented towards a remodelling of the urban centre. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the first reforms, which stemmed from the European rationalistic ideas, were directed towards a demilitarization of the city, defining its facade to the sea with boulevards and promenades in order to dignify the entrance to the city. The new image of propriety and decorum generated the incorporation of monuments in the city layout, as well as the renovation of facades and the construction of works of public interest. In the second half of the century, the leading groups of society decided to take part in the development of the urban fabric passing alignment and enlargement laws and regulations. |
