| Abstract | Soil moisture measurements are essential in soilwater balance studies. There are different methods, direct and indirect, for measuring the soil-water content, each one with advantages and disadvantages. Capacitance sensors allow the construction of highly portable profile probes, which, with a single equipment, allow measuring and storing these data from different locations, depths, and time intervals, which can constitute an excellent tool for monitoring and studying the processes that govern soil-water dynamics. However, the use of that alternative depends on verification of generated data quality. Thus, the objective of this paper was to verify the applicability of a capacitance profile probe PR2/6 of Delta-T Devices Ltd., for measuring soil-water content in the field of typical Cerrado Biome soils in different monitoring locations. At eight locations, six depths, and different seasons of the year, 162 soil moisture data were obtained with the selected probe and, simultaneously, gravimetric water-contents were measured to compare the results at each point. The results indicate that the DeltaT PR2/6 capacitance profile probe, using a unique relationship between the voltage and soil-water content, cannot replace the gravimetric method to monitor the soil moisture of Cerrado Biome Oxisoils appropriately under field conditions.
