| Abstract | Problem: Which are the driving factors creating queues at the different sections at the Department of Orthopedics and is it possible to use enhanced knowledge of these factors to create competitive advantage when conducting capacity planning? Will this also lead to an increased service level towards the patients? Purpose: Improve the capacity planning in order to free resources and reduce waiting times. Research which data is necessary to in an effective and efficient way evaluate the operation and to better cope with the current work load. Method: The report depends a great deal on quantitative data retrieved from the hospitals computer system QlickView. It also relies on quality focused interviews conducted with the purpose to complement and verify the data retrieved. The result of quantitative methods of analysis has been compared with the actual outcome in order to increase to reliability of the study. Conclusions: Seasonality’s and a lack of knowledge in capacity planning are the main reasons to the queue increase. To counter this effect it’s necessary to increase awareness of the problem through forecasting of patient flows. |
