References to UV-VIS-tNIR (200-1,000 nm) wood reflectance that studies is very scarce in world literature, in spite of the fact that equipments that operate in this range of electromagnetic spectrum have much lower costs than those that operate in the NIR (700-2,500 nm). The objective of the present work was to verify the possibility of using UV-VIS-tNIR spectra for calibration purpose in wood properties determination. It was proven that there exists of strong correlation between solid wood surface reflectance and its basic specific gravity, with the highest correlation coefficient found near 375 nm, exactly the region of major radiant energy absorption by lignin. Multivariate calibration models by principal components regression was constructed. To optimize the models performances, pre-processing techniques were applied on spectroscopic data, like reduction in spectral resolution, polynomial filtering and mathematics transformations on reflectance like absorbance computing, Kubelka-Munk function, division by variance, square root and Box-Cox function. It was concluded that is possible to obtain reasonably good estimates of basic specific gravity of wood (R=0.89 and RMSEP=5% 40,75 kg/m) with UV-VIS-tNIR reflectance using 5 components in a model based on spectroscopic data. However, no good results were obtained for roughness, hardness and crushing strength calibrations with the present method. |
