| Abstract | The objective of the present work was to determine physical (basic density and retractibility) and mechanical (strength in compression parallel to the grain, tangential shear strenght to the growth rings, modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity in static bending) properties of E. urophylla wood, nineteen years old, from the island of Flores. A test of nine accessions and sixty three progenies from Anhembi, São Paulo, Forestry Experimental Station, belonging to “Luiz de Queiroz” Superior Agricultural School, São Paulo University. Twenty progenies were selected, two trees per repetition, in a total of one hundred and twenty trees. Four specimens were taken from each tree to the determination of the mentioned properties. There was no significant statistical difference among the progenies for the properties studied, except for radial and volumetric retraction. The volumetric retraction presented 0.66 heritability for plants among the progeny. The presented results enable the classification of the species in having medium to high mechanical strength, high shrinkage and being moderately heavy. Due to the results obtained, the specie is more indicated for carpentry (its structure) than for furniture. |
