| Abstract | By contrasting Spanish and German perspectives, this research focuses on impersonality as a strategy of attenuation. To this end, the phenomenon of impersonality and the different constructions found in the two languages were analyzed. An empirical study was conducted with the Spanish novel El lector de Julio Verne and its German translation Der Feind meines Vaters. The mechanisms identified in the Spanish novel were examined as were the ways in which these were translated into German in order to determine if the strategies used the same, or if, by contrast, they varied due to the mechanisms inherent in each language. The results reveal that the most frequently used impersonal attenuation strategy in both languages is that which constructs the forms without an agent and which aims to save one’s own face. In terms of the attenuation mechanisms used by the main characters in the novel, the impersonal is seen to be similar due to the syntactic structure of each language. |
