| Abstract | This thesis is a study of the postvocalic lateral as it refers to its realization as a velarized or vocalized variant, under the variationist perspective. The corpus used is the dialect spoken by twenty-eight persons of four representative regions of different ethnic groups that exist in Rio Grande do Sul. We examined the linguistic and extralinguistic variables that are involved in the variation under study and the ethnic group variable was confirmed as the one which most favors the presence of the two variants. Furthermore, we present the rules of velarization and vocalization of postvocalic lateral in terms of phonological features along Clements' line and we discuss their position in the system, according to the Lexical Phonology line. |
