| Abstract | The role of the school has provided deep debate amongst education professionals, scholars and researchers. The present article shows the result of a research which happened in a school context, with aims to understand how school actors see the role of the school. The work was based on a set of studies which approach the complexity and ambiguity of functions imposed on the school nowadays. It is a qualitative research, in which semi-structured interviews were carried out with High School supervisors and directors in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, with the theoretical support of authors like: Charlot (2008); Souza Santos (2009); Morin (1993); Gimeno Sacristan (1998, 2001, 2005); Anastasiou (2010); Arroyo (2010); Freire (2000, 1977); Perez Gomez (2001); Canario (2005); Rios (2006) amongst others. School, as a public space, according to the interviewed professionals, has as basic principles the insertion of the subject in society, critical reconstruction of knowledge and the proposition of policies and standards of living.
