| Abstract | This paper questions current links between pharmaceuticals and individuals in urban Africa. It attempts to deconstruct the initial questionings of pharmaceutical anthropologists, who tended in Southern societies to consider only pharmaceutical uses according to local perceptions of health and illness. Through a social anthropological study led in Cotonou, economic capital of Benin, between 2005 and 2007, this contribution shows how health system centered on pharmaceuticals joins to “traditional” knowledge to build current health popular knowledge in Cotonou. Ensuing pharmaceutical uses, stimulated by the commercial stakes which surround this marketable object, highlight a high pharmaceutical consumption, quasi-daily and which often leads to self-medication. With various objectives of health care (curative, preventive, Les usages du medicament au Benin Revue Internationale sur le Medicament, vol. 4 (1), 2012 16 health maintaining), these uses are rarely comply with biomedical recommendations. They show the growth of pharmaceutical market in African societies. |
