| Abstract | ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to discuss the relationship between opening up coastal shipping to foreign companies and the changes in the domestic shipping industry between 1866 and 1891. We present an overview of the conditions that led to the opening of navigation in the Brazil, commodity flow and the formation of the Brazilian domestic market, the situation of domestic and foreign companies, the subsidy policy implemented by the Imperial government and the material conditions of the yards . We assume that the opening generated contradictory movements in the Brazilian economy, which was expanding rapidly with the formation of complex regional agro-market exporters. On the one hand, the opening deniedng the possibilities of expansion of domestic companies and shipyards, on the other it made the broadening the market possible by accelerating the flow process of linking trade, expanding the market for domestic companies. Key-words: Navigation; liberalism; domestic market. Classificacao JEL: N76 Artigo recebido em ago. 2010 e aceito para publicacao em jun. 2011. |
