Abstract	Atualmente, grande soma de recursos do governo federal esta sendo aplicada na implementacao do Projeto de Integracao da Bacia do Rio Sao Francisco com as Bacias do Nordeste Setentrional, mais conhecido como Projeto de Transposicao do Sao Francisco. Esse projeto pretende aumentar a oferta hidrica para multiplos usos em parte da regiao semiarida. Especificamente os estados do Ceara, Pernambuco, Paraiba e Rio Grande do Norte serao os beneficiarios desse projeto. Entre os beneficios esperados, inclui-se a dinamizacao de alguns projetos de agricultura irrigada nessa regiao. Este estudo e composto de cinco secoes. Alem da introducao e da conclusao, na segunda aborda a questao do estagio atual de desenvolvimento da agricultura irrigada no Nordeste Setentrional. Com base nesse apanhado geral sobre a situacao atual, foi possivel na terceira secao discorrer sobre as perspectivas de desenvolvimento da agricultura irrigada nessa regiao a partir do aumento da oferta hidrica resultante do Projeto de Transposicao. Na quarta secao, o enfoque recaiu sobre as limitacoes existentes ao desenvolvimento da agricultura. Currently, a large amount of the Federal Government`s resources is being applied in the implementation of the Sao Francisco river water transfer project in the Northeast region of Brazil. This project aims to increase water supply for multiple uses in part of the Semi-Arid Northeastern region. Specifically the states of Ceara, Pernambuco, Paraiba and Rio Grande do Norte will be the beneficiaries of this project. Among the expected benefits include the development of some irrigated agriculture projects in this region. This study was composed of five parts, including the introduction and conclusion: the second part, addressed the issue of the current stage of development of irrigated agriculture in the Northeast region. From this overview on the current situation, it was possible to discuss the prospects for development of irrigated agriculture in this region resulting from the increased water supply. In the forth section, the focus fell on the existing constraints to the development of irrigated agriculture.
