| Abstract | The conducted worldwide researches on air pollution caused by the emission of toxic substances from ship's engines are based on a simplified input parameters. Existing databases of emissions of toxic compounds in the exhaust vessels gases from different parts of the world, cannot be used to estimate emissions in meso and micro scale, eg. The Baltic Sea or the Gulf of Gdansk. Such procedure leads to excessive generalization of emission, primarily due to lack of the required detail characteristics of ship's traffic. The first issue carried out during the project realization, which one of final effects was to create a research tool in the form of a program to simulate the emission of toxic fumes generated by main engines of ships, was to create a database of vessel traffic in selected marine region (eg. The Gulf of Gdansk). The data was obtained from the Automatic Identification System (AIS). The created database, not only the parameters of vessel traffic in the analyzed region of the sea was collected, but also the available construction and operating data such as the size, displacement, nominal power for main engines, etc. These data, after appropriate treatment has produced so called thrust characteristics, which became the base for determining the requested power by the propeller including different shipping conditions. Information about the instantaneous requested power was necessary to determine the characteristics of emissions of toxic exhaust gases. As a result of researches the original computer program MEFSAS (Model of Emission From Ships At Sea) had been developed. Program allows to set the engine power in classic propeller driving unit (and on the basis of it the emission characteristics) depending on the different shipping conditions in the static and dynamic states. |
