| Abstract | In Ivory Coast as in many other African countries, traditionally male-dominated migration flows are progressively being “feminized”. Resuits from the Ivoirian Survey on Migration and Urbanization carried out in 1993 clearly indicate that women migrate as ofien as men, particularly with respect to urban migration. Is this migratory pattern an indication of greater female autonomy from family pressures and gender relations in general? This is the central question deait with in this thesis using data from the Ivoirian Survey mentioned above: specifically, the thesis aims to analyse the impact of gender relations on the migratory process, from the beginning of the process with the decision to migrate to its outcome in terms of integration in the area of destination. The thesis is divided into three articles. The first article shows that even though the volume of female migration is important, women are stiil little autonomous with respect to family influence. Whether looking at the motive for migration or who makes the decision to migrate, the resuits show that the family continues to exert control on female mobility.
