| Abstract | Objective: to raise in the literature as to the applicability of non-pharmacological strategies for pain relief, in order to contribute to improving the quality of obstetric nursing care for women during childbirth. Methodology: this is an integrative review of literature that used a qualitative descriptive method, with analysis of available publications in the database BIREME held between October and November 2009. We included articles published from 2000 to 2009, with complete texts and articles produced by nursing or with its participation, the exclusion criteria, consisting of international studies, since our goal is to know the reality of Brazil; hence we selected 10 articles from these criteria. Results: were collected 4 studies that supported the applicability, effectiveness and benefits through the thematic question. Conclusion: it the implementation of the non-pharmacological strategies, the process of labor may be less painful, less tense, because the parturient need attention, counseling and communication skills.
