| Abstract | Chaves, Vera Lucia de Vasconcelos.Estudo de prevalência e fatores de risco do sobrepeso e da obesidade em adolescentes masculinos. 2008.Thesis (Doctor of Public Health) — Centro de Pesquisas Aggeu Magalhães, Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, Recife, 2008. INTRODUCTION: The secular trend of obesity points to the growing risks of it worldwide. Overweight and obesity associated with other factors are considered determinants of high prevalence of non-transmitted chronic diseases. The cause of obesity is multi factorial, including genetic, neuroendocrine, dietetics, psychological, cultural, social economic between others causes. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity; to verify their secular trend in Brazil, as well as in its five regions and every its states, from 1980 to 2005; and, to identify in one of its capital-city (Recife – state of Pernambuco) the possibles risk factors associated with those abnormalities. METHODS: During the first phase of the study, the annual prevalence of overweight and obesity and its secular trend were determined, by using a bank of secondary data belonging to The Brazilian Army Integrated of Telematic Center, which provided information of 8,989,508 male adolescents, from 17 to 19 years of age, from all Brazilian states, and from 1980 to 2005. According to the World Health Organization, overweight was considered when the Body Mass Index (BMI) was between 25 and 29.9 Kg/m2 and obesity when the BMI was ≥ 30Kg/m2. In order to identify possibles associations of overweight and obesity with some risk factors, such as social economic, cultural and hereditary status, alimentary habits, sedentary and physical activities, a case-control study was performed during the second phase of the study, by using data collected by means of a structured questionnaire and, an anthropometrics data, of 3,371 male adolescents whom present for the army in Recife during the second semester of 2006. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Data analysis demonstrated that, the prevalence of overweight and obesity, in all the studied population, rosed along the 26 study period, and that the number of Brazilians male adolescents with overweight increased three times, and with obesity six times. The highest prevalence of overweight and obesity were seen, with equivalents values, at the South and Southeast Regions. The overweight increased faster at the Northeast region (3.4 times) and for the obesity it occurred at the North one (9.1 times). An association between overweight, obesity and all the risk factors mentioned above was also seen, but the hereditary and the social economic one, explained more the adjusted model. |
