| Abstract | The monopolistic competition theory, that was mainly developed in the 20's ands 30's by economists such as Piero Sraffa, Joan Robinson and Edward Chamberlin, helped economists to focus their interest on the theory of the firm and to call market and equilibrium analysis into question. This approach was however abandoned in the early 40's, because of internal contradictions, but above all, because of the difficulty for economists to bring the value theory into the analysis of intra and inter firms relationships. Today however, the progresses that were accomplished in the theory of the firm, mainly by the neo-institutionalist school, would make it possible to start again this research program. The objective would be, for contemporary economists, to rest on the monopolistic competition theory in order to implement a more ambitious and general economic theory based on the actual knowledge of the firm. |
