| Abstract | Arid and semiarid rangelands show low yield and forage quality. The objective was to evaluate the effects of biosolids application on blue grama in a semiarid rangeland. Biosolids at 15 to 90 t ha-1 rates were surface-applied one-time only to 1 m-2 plots, and a control treatment (C). Blue grama height, forage yield, crude protein (CP), and digestibility were estimated in 2002 and 2003, and seed yield and germination in 2002. Data were analyzed under a completely randomized design and trend analysis. Blue grama height increased (P<=,,0.01) in both years. Forage yield per hectare increased (P<=,,0.01) in 2002 and 2003 (P<=,,0.01) from 572+-184 kg at C to 5,638+-1,406 kg at 60 t, and from 476+-171 kg at C to 7,224+-672 kg at 90 t. In 2002, CP increased (P<=,,0.01) from 5.3+-0.4 % at C to 10.5+-0.3 % at 90 t and (P<=,,0.01) from 5.4+-0.2 % at C to 8.0+-0.4 % at 90 t in 2003. Forage digestibility increased (P<=,,0.01) in 2002 with 36+-3 % at C to 44+-2 % at 90 t. Seed yield and germination increased (P<=,,0.01) with 8+-4 kg at C up to 269+-50 kg at 45 t, while seed germination varied from 8+-5 % at C to 28+-6 % at 60 t. Application of biosolids in semiarid rangelands increases blue grama forage yield and quality. |
