| Abstract | The water deficit is one of the main factors limiting agricultural production in arid and semi-arid areas of the world. Our hypothesis was that the furrow diking (FD) planting system could increase oat fodder (Avena sativa L.) yield, and that harvesting fodder at physiological maturity stage improves its quality. From 2005 to 2007, the furrow diking (FD) planting system and harvesting at milk dough (MD) and physiological maturity (PM) stages were measured for their effects on yield and fodder quality of five varieties of oats grown under rainfed conditions in the northwest region of the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. The design was sub-subdivided plots in random complete blocks; site was repetition, the large plot was the planting system, the medium-size plot the maturity stage at harvest, and the small plot the variety. The chemical composition and dry matter digestibility (DMD) of the oat hay were measured without taking into account the effect of the planting system FD. Dry matter yield was 8.7 % higher (P 0.05) with 9.50 and 9.20 %; neutral detergent fiber varied (P<0.05) from 54.9 to 50.2 %; acid detergent fiber from 30.6 to 27.7 % (P<0.05); lignin from 3.1 to 2.8 % (P<0.05) and DMD from 65.0 to 67.3 % (P<0.05), respectively. The FD system increased production of oat hay The nutritional value was similar for the varieties. Oat hay harvested at PM provided greater fodder production with lower content of cell wall. |
