| Abstract | Impacts from the implementation of the Intranet in the information units of four Universities in Porto Alegre country Pontificia Universidade Catolica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), Faculdades Integradas Ritter dos Reis, Universidade Luterana do Brasil (ULBRA) and Universidade do Rio dos Sinos (Unisinos) are analyzed. The theoretical reference covers aspects related to information and knowledge technologies, globalization of information through nets especially the Internet and Intranet and the role of Universities and their libraries in the new Information and Knowledge Society. Multiple case study technic in the collection of data is used. Data collection is made by means of a tailor made research instrument divided in two modules. The first is a questionary which deals with technical data on the use of the net, answered by four librarians in charge of the investigated information units. The second one is complemented by a semi structured interview on organizational and human data about the use of Intranet, applied on 40 librarians working on the four specified libraries. The data allow to trace the state of art of the investigated libraries, the required profile of the librarian, the available products and services in the net and the behavior of the remote and local users. The information about the professional perception concerning the use of the net and the new ways of communication are also collected. The impacts caused by the implementation of computer nets and the changes being caused on the librarian profile are concluded. The increase of on line communication, the constant exchange among users in order to detect their needs of information and new products and services, the establishment of management policies of on line information, the editing and publication of multimedia documents and the professional updating of the librarians through continuous learning and long distance courses are recommended. ∗ ∗ Doutoranda em Comunicacao e Informacao pelo PPGCOM/UFRGS.
