| Abstract | This chapter provides an introduction to the research described in this thesis. Several synthetic strategies for the derivatisation of 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine with functionalities that allow further linkage to polymeric structures either in the side chains or in the polymer backbone are illustrated. Transition metal ions, such as ruthenium(II) or iridium(III), can efficiently coordinate these ligands. Apart from the coordination chemistry, combination with polymeric structures offers the possibility to design materials that reveal both the non-covalent interactions and the polymer features within one molecule. The transition metal complexes we address here, ruthenium(II) and iridium(III), are interesting due to their photophysical and electrochemical properties, which make them suitable candidates for applications in light-emitting electrochemical cells and/or dye sensitised solar cells. |
