| Abstract | Adenocarcinoma of the urachus is a rare cancer of the urothelial tissue possibly originating from embryonic remains during bladder development, or from me- taplasia of the median umbilical ligament itself. Usually these tumors are not diagnosed early given the meager symptoms which, if present, at the later stages of the disease, are expressed as signs resulting from the impairment of the bladder and/or pain or suprapubic mass. On the other hand, diagnostic imaging, especially by ultrasound and/or CT scan, is quite characteristic. Radical resection is the most effective treatment, but in recurrent or metastatic disease, the prognosis is extremely poor because it is little responsive to radiotherapy and so far there is no chemotherapy regimen defined and with appropriate responses. |
