Abstract The article analyzes the history of the Patio 29 in the context of the politics of the past in Chile. In the Patio 29, an area in the General Cemetery of Santiago, were buried more than 100 victims of the Pinochet dictatorship. During the transition to democracy, these victims were exhumed, identified and given to their families. In 2006, it came out that almost all identifications were wrong. The families of the victims had to go through the “disappearance” of their loved ones for a second time. The article traces the interdependencies between the politics of the past in Chile and the tragic history of the Patio 29, aiming to determinate the problems that exist in Chile to establish a memory about the past. Referring to Steve Stern’s concept of “emblematic memory”, the paper shows that, in the case of the Patio 29, there is an “eternization” of the trauma and mistrust in the families of the victims. The article highlights that, even 40 years after the coup d’etat , in Chile, there are still not only different visions about the past, but also still memories excluded from the official version of history. |
