| Abstract | As a contribution to the international TOGA program, the COARE 156-1 croise was carried out by the ORSTOM-SURTROPAC group (Noumea), PMEUNOAA (Seattle) and 1IMAR 1 University of Hawaii. The eroise, on board the RN LE NOROlT from the french oceanographie fleet, lasted from August the 20th to September the 16th 1991, between New-Caledonia and the Bougainville Strait and betwen 6 S and lOON along the 156°E meridian. During the croise, the following operations have been earried out: 42 CID casts (0-1500 m) with Rosette samples, 41 XBT launches, continuous measurements of absolute currents (0-400 m) with an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler, automatic sea-surface temperature and salinity measurements every 5 minutes using a thermosalinograph, standard meteorological observations every three hours, together with deployments of five new TOGAITAO moorings. In addition, 14 drifting buoys were launched. The present report describes the croise operations, the equipments and methods used. Preliminary data and graphs are also added. |
