| Abstract | Currently, in order to promote more active information sharing within Wikipedia, translation activities are being carried out spontaneously by individuals. Most translation tasks are performed by bilingual speakers who have high language skills and specialized knowledge of the articles. Unfortunately, compared to the large amount of Wikipedia articles, the number of such qualified translators is very small. Thus, a machine translation technology was proposed for Wikipedia translation activities in order to bridge contributors who have knowledge on a specialized field in the source language and those who have knowledge of the target language. Within this approach there are two issues that need to be solved. 1. Unclear functional role of machine translation in Wikipedia translation activities A multilingual discussion tool using machine translation was introduced to enable the multilingual communication between these two populations. This could change the population involved in Wikipedia translation activities as well as the working process they have used up to the present. Therefore, the functional role of machine translation has to be clarified in order to design a new working process for translation activities so that we can better understand the human behaviors of contributors in Wikipedia translation activities. 2. Incomplete understanding of multilingual discussion in Wikipedia translation The difficulty of applying multilingual discussion to Wikipedia translation activities lies in the simple fact that current machine translations cannot provide a perfect translation result, while translation activities on Wikipedia articles typically require accurate understanding of every term in the source article. Thus, without a complete understanding of how multilingual discussion affects Wikipedia translation, we cannot provide a better support to improve this tool. This has been designed in this research. We ran an experiment by applying this process where participants carried out translation activities of Wikipedia articles with the assistance of such a tool. 2. Clarifying the effects of introducing multilingual discussion to Wikipedia translation The effects of introducing multilingual discussion to Wikipedia translation activities are studied and reported in this research by observing both system performance and human behavior. From our experiment using this tool, we found out that users made high use of the tool and communicated actively across different languages. Furthermore, most of such multilingual discussions seemed to be effective in transferring knowledge between different languages. Such success appeared to be made possible by a distinctive communication pattern which emerged as the users tried to avoid misunderstandings from machine translation errors. These findings … |
